Falafel Tof is an Israeli quick-bite restaurant on Hoogstraat, which is two minutes walking distance to Grote Markt. This is a pure falafel shop with vegetarian-friendly options. The place designed simply; there are tables inside and in front of the shop. Everything seems tidy and clean, plus you can see the kitchen through the glasses.
I have to admit that before we go to Falafel Tof, I was a bit scared. Yes, scared. Why? Because on Google reviews people either hated it or loved it. Despite the hater comments, the score was still high, and we wanted to experience it on our own. Haters gonna hate. Right from the start, the owner started to talk to us in a funny and friendly way. I think he is a witty guy; he even made us laugh. He also knows many languages, super cool!
The falafel sandwich comes with tzatziki sauce, and then you can add whatever toppings you want and as much as you want from the open buffet. This is the place to live your falafel fantasy! Cucumber, tomato, red cabbage, beetroot, peppers, chickpeas, pickle, radish, onion… so many freshly prepared options. Some other toppings are not in the buffet with extra charges, such as feta cheese. I love the combination of falafel with feta cheese. And Cheesus! The feta cheese was just amazing. Besides all these toppings, they serve additional homemade sauces at the table; mango, garlic, and tahini. The sauces are finger licking good, creamy with a balanced taste. Perfect match to the savory and firm falafel.
The texture of the falafel was spot on; nice and crunchy outside, moist and soft inside. What else you want? There are few things worse than a dry falafel. Another critical point, it wasn’t greasy or fatty at all. We had no disturbance after eating (which usually happens when we eat fried falafel). If you want to experience a falafel with the right flavor and textural notes bursting in your mouth, this is the place. It was two o’clock, and after one bite of falafel Tof, I was ready to go to bed: I felt like, I fulfilled my Saturday. No bullshit, this is the best falafel I have ever enjoyed.
Even though it was a bit crowded, our order was ready in 10 minutes. The staff was friendly and quick. The background music was funny for me; you can expect to hear some heavy metal songs to top pop hits. It didn’t bother me at all; I like random and surprising things. The only downside can be the order/payment system. You have to get in the line for order, and after you finish to pay. You are lucky if there is no line!
Know before you go: it’s addictive!
Except being the best falafel in the town so far, Falafel Tof proved itself as a great spot to grab something quick, delicious and filling at a reasonable price. I love the concept and freedom of choosing whatever I want in my pita. I have to warn you; you might be addicted to this place!
